Description

(Haven’t used Derpibooru much, apologies if I’ve goofed something up!)
She’s a slightly doughy baker with an affinity for nature jogs to clear her mind and history books to refill it. The gal struggles profoundly with finding the words to say, but remains functional with a bundle of rehearsed phrases.
Berry Biscuits is an earth pony, the strong and quiet type with a rustic charm, and proud owner of her little bakery, Biscuits’ Breads, specializing in mundane and savory baked goods. It’s her own little world and sports a wooden cabin aesthetic, rich with the smell of freshly baked bread. Three berry bushes line the front of the store, with a sign advertising them as free samples for her signature dish, a three-berry biscuit, as also advertised by the cutie mark on her flank. After a pre-dawn start to the day and working her store, she usually enjoys a long jog, ice-cold shower, and cozying up with a thick-thick history book. It’s a satisfying life for her, if subtly lonely. She’s on the tall end of average for a mare, unremarkably so, but appreciably stockier, thanks to natural earth pony strength compounded by her daily exercise, bustle of keeping a store supplied, and chowing down on whatever baked goods didn’t sell that day.
It’s a small miracle that she turned out as well-adjusted as she did. Her quiet disposition isn’t voluntary, but rather the result of extensively trying to compensate for a much, much more limiting impediment. As a filly, and to a lesser extent as an adult, Berry really struggled with putting her thoughts into words. She was and is exceptionally smart, but finding words to express herself has always been a challenge, which isn’t helped by her near-monotone voice and rather muted expressions. It’s akin to having to find every word in a dictionary right before saying it, and as a foal, her dictionary’s pages were out of order. At best, she can find a good-enough word every few seconds, but this could take ten times longer as a foal.
Berry’s mother was a Type-A overachiever of a civil engineer, entirely devoted to her goal of making Ponyville a better place to live - cobblestone streets, sensible market square locations, bridges, parks, drainage, and maintenance. She was basically always at work, and when she wasn’t, she was either unwinding at the bar or giving Berry a sky-high list of expectations to live up to - join her morning run, learn to speak, sit up straighter, study harder, read more, get your cutie mark already, learn to smile. She conceived Berry by accident from an after-work bar fling, and her harsh personality ultimately ran the stallion off before Berry was born. Berry’s inquiries to her mom were stonewalled, and while the filly sometimes tried to find her dad, her limited speech and lack of clues have left her rather hopeless. She didn’t know if he even knew she existed.
Bitter, resentful, and lacking a role model, combined with her speech impediment, young Berry quickly became a social outcast and thus recipient of teasing, which further bristled her against others and thus further isolated her. She became something of a bully, if only to make the other foals second-guess teasing her. It wasn’t until an exceptionally bull-headed Tenderheart, with Sunny Side in tow, butted into her life and refused to leave that she began to open up to others, further helped by friendly runs and later races with Chrysanthemum. Her cutie mark finally came, years later in life than most other foals, when she was baking a treat for Sunny. The other filly had helped her realize that she could practice phrases ahead of time, so she could better communicate in the moment, and she managed to truly put (platonic) love into her craft in return.
In short, imagine Maud Pie mixed with early Twilight Sparkle, a little more expressive than Maud but with a lot fewer words, more obsessed with history and bread than rocks, and you’ve about got Berry’s personality.
